Divided into 100 santeem, the dinar replaced, at a ratio of 1:1 the Algerian new frank in 1964. The Algerian coin system is unusual in that it comprises of fractional dinars, rather than amounts of santeem, although during the 1990’s Algeria saw an incredible rise in inflation which meant that santeem and fractional coins became less used.
Current available coin denominations are; 1/4, ½, 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 and 100 dinars.
Banknotes currently in circulation are 200, 500 and 1000 dinars, although 100 and 2,000 dinar notes are in circulation, they are rare and are not used frequently. The 200 dinar coin was released in 2012 and commemorates Algeria’s 50th year as an independent country. Prices in Algeria are usually rounded to the nearest 5 dinars.
