Currency Information on Brazilian Real - BRL — Brazilian real – R$
The Brazilian real was originally introduced as part of the Plano real, a plan designed to stabilise the Brazilian economy, in 1994. When it was introduced, the Brazilian real was engineered to be worth 1 USD exactly, by equating the real to be worth 1 Real Value Unit, which was the value of a non-circulating currency, at a time when the Real Value unit was worth the same amount of cruzeiros reais as 1 dollar.
New coins released in 2012, bear the Olympic flag and have the inscription ‘Olympic flag handover’ to commemorate the handover between London and Rio in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Real are subdivided into centavos, and coins are available in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos and 1 real. Real banknote denominations in circulation are 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 real, with the 1 real banknote being discontinued in 2006.
