The Colombian peso is informally abbreviated to COL$, in order to distinguish it from other currencies which use the dollar sign as official symbols.

The Colombian peso was introduced in 1810, when it replaced the Colombian Real at a 1peso: 8 real ratio.

50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 peso coins are available, as are 20 peso coins, though these are not found frequently. 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 peso banknotes are currently in circulation.
