The currently used gourde is the third incarnation of the currency, having been revalued twice since being introduced in 1813, first at a rate of ten to one, then at a rate of 300:1.

1 gourde is worth 100 centimes and coins are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 centimes and 1 and 5 gourdes.

Banknotes are in circulation in denominations of 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 gourdes. 1, 2, 5 and 1,000 gourde notes exist, but they are rarely used and are no longer issued.
