The Kenyan shilling was first issued in 1966, and denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, 1 and 2 shillings were minted, though 25 cent coins ceased to be minted in 1971, save for the 1973 commemorative coin set.
Frequently used coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 40 shillings, and the 50 cent coin is rarely used.
Banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 shillings, though 10 and 20 shilling notes are used infrequently.
