Originally, until 1344, the Maldives traded using shells, when the dinar was introduced; the one dinar coin was worth 400,000 shells.

Coins ceased to be made specifically for the Maldives in the 1900’s and this resulted in the supplementary issuing of banknotes on 1947.

Coins are available in denominations of 1 laari, 5 laari, 10 laari, 25 laari, 50 laari, Rf 1 and Rf 2. Banknotes are available in denominations of Rf. 5, Rf. 10, Rf. 20, Rf. 50, Rf. 100 and Rf. 500.
