Currency Information on Mauritian Rupee - MUR— Mauritian Rupee – Rs
Established as the official local currency of Mauritius in 1876, the rupee was selected as a result of the influx of Indian rupees due to Indian immigration to Mauritius.
The Indian rupee was replaced in Mauritius, by the Mauritian rupee in 1877. The Mauritian rupee ceased to be pegged to the Indian rupee, and was instead pegged to the pound sterling, at a rate of 131/3 rupees = 1 pound.
Mauritian rupee coins are available in denominations of 5 cents, 20 cents, ₨½, ₨ 1, ₨ 5, ₨ 10 and ₨ 20, whilst banknotes in circulation are available in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 300, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupees.
