Moldova used the Romanian leu between 1918 and 1944, apart from during 1940 and 1941, following the collapse of the Soviet Union;

Moldova created the temporary cupon currency, which the Moldovan leu replaced at a ratio of 1 leu: 1000 cupon.

Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 bani and banknotes are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 lei.
