The rupee or rupiya has been in circulation since 1947, the dissolution of the British Raj., the currency is subdivided into 100 paise, however coins in denominations of paise have not been in circulation or issued since 1994.

Coins in denominations of 1,2 and 5 rupees are in circulation, as are banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupees.
