The first official currency of Ceylon was the British pound, which was introduced in 1825. The Indian rupee was introduced in 1836 and used in transactions, although the pound remained the legal tender, and accounts were kept in pounds, shillings and pence.

The Indian rupee was given legal tender status in 1869 and was decimalised in 1871, it became the sole legal tender in 1872.

Frequently used coins are circulated in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees. 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent coins are not used frequently.

Banknotes area available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000, though the 10, 200 and 2000 rupee notes are infrequently used, and 10,000 rupee notes are used solely for inter-bank exchanges.
