Prior to 1798, there were 75 different establishments issuing coins for different currencies, this resulted in the circulation of over 860 different coins.

The Helvetic republic introduced the franc in 1798, which was equal to 1 ½ French francs. The franc was replaced in 1803, but returned once again in 1850, as the franc of the Swiss Confederation, one currency to replace the numerous coins in circulation, which had reached over 8,000.

Coins are available in denominations of 5, 10, and 20 centimes, as well as ½, 1, 2, and 5 francs. Banknotes are in circulation in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1,000 francs.
