Currency Information on Zambian Kwacha - ZMK – Zambian Kwacha – ZMW

Subdivided into 100 ngwee, the kwacha was introduced in 1968, replacing the pound at a ratio of 1 pound: 2 kwacha.

The currency suffered due to severe economic crisis in the 1990’s, resulting in mass depreciation, and taking the value of the kwacha from 1,2 k: $1 to 4, 800 kwacha to 1 US dollar.

Coins are available in denominations of 5, 10 and 50 ngwee and 1 kwacha, banknotes circulate in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 kwacha.
