The New Taiwan dollar replaced the Old Taiwan dollar in 1949, at a ratio of 40,000 old Taiwan dollars to 1 new Taiwan dollar.

In comparison to the US dollar, the exchange rate has varied over time from less than 10:1 to over 40:1, most recently it has stabilised at around 30:1.

Frequently used coin denominations include $1, $5, $10 and $50, whilst denominations of $½ and $20 are rarely used. Banknotes are available in denominations of $100, $200, $500, $1000 and $2000, but the denominations $200 and $2000 are rarely used.
